Network Literacy Blog Online Rights and Responsibilities.

This blog is for a Network Literacy assessment, I have included some text which explains the Online Rights and Responsibilities.

Here I will explain some of the online rights and responsibilities for being online.

Communication over the internet has been rapidly increasing since it started back in 1969. Many people do not understand that the internet is public domain and anything can be sourced and found. Yet these people continue to use the internet and continue to post images, statuses, videos and audio.

There are many rights and responsibilities for being online so I will name a few major ones (in my opinion). There is Rules for Copyright and that means that if you upload an image, a video and music claiming that it is your own work when it is not and you do not have the permission from the owner then you are in breach of copyright.

Libel, it is the publication of a false statement of fact that is used to harm another persons’ reputation – e.g. “John Smith is a thief” when it isn’t true. If the statement is the opposite then it is not Libel – e.g. “John Smith passed his course”.

Invasion of privacy has a few laws that protect your right to privacy. Under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, a federal statute, it is a crime to look into someone else’s private e-mail or computer account without the other persons’ permission. Even if you have the ability to access someone’s system whether it is hacking or lack of safeguards you are still breaking the law and can also be sued.

Obscenity, Child Pornography and indecency, Under state and federal law, it is said that if you were to publish, sell, distribute, display, or in some cases, possess obscene materials or child pornography you are breaking the law.

Hacking Cracking and Similar Activities; Under the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and similar statutes, you are also breaking the law if, you access a computer without permission, if you alter the data in a computer without permission, to transmit computers viruses and worms over computer networks, to send spam, or to engage in other negative activities that affect the operation of the computer.
